Nigel Griffiths: "concerned"

Minister Demands Inquiry into Food Poisoning

The Consumer Affairs Minister, Nigel Griffiths, has called for a report on a suspected outbreak of salmonella food poisoning among British holidaymakers.

500 tourists were moved from the Hotel Presidente at Portinatx on Ibiza after 20 Britons became ill. The hotel is used exclusively by Thomson Holidays, and the company says everything is being done to contain the outbreak and discover its source.

Mr Griffiths said there had been other salmonella outbreaks at hotels associated with British tour operators, and he was anxious to have them investigated.

"I'm very concerned because quite clearly children and possibly older people have been involved and that's when it can get very serious. So it's important that we know what happened, why it happened, how quickly it was tackled and most important of all, an assurance that this is not going to happen again," he said.

He said that although 20 million British people went on holiday without suffering serious health problems, it was essential to ensure that tour operators took proper precautions against food poisoning.
