Floods
River levels are still rising

Fear of New Floods
Across Central Europe

Heavy rain has raised river levels in a number of central European countries, threatening a repeat of the flooding which has so far killed a hundred people.

The authorities in eastern Germany have declared a state of maximum alert after the River Oder reached its highest level in places for 50 years.

The Oder has already broken through defences in several places, and dykes along the border with Poland are under serious pressure.

Officials in the Brandenburg region of eastern Germany criticise the Polish authorities for opening flood retention barriers further up stream without warning, increasing their problem.

In the worst-affected countries, Poland and the Czech Republic, more towns and villages have been evacuated.

In Poland, people living along the Seine River, watched water levels rise overnight and then stabilise during Sunday. The authorities were leaving little to chance as they concentrated on repairing and reinforcing flood barriers.

At the same time they said they were more optimistic since the rain hadn't been as heavy as feared and the second wave of flooding didn't seem to be on the same scale as last week.
