Slaughter: focusing on health

Labour Puts Health at Top of By-election Agenda

As the countdown to the Uxbridge by-election continues the Conservatives accused the Government of letting Britain down while Labour highlighted its promise to improve breast cancer services.

With ten days to go until polling day on Thursday July 31, the Health Secretary Frank Dobson was in the constituency to boost the campaign of Labour's candidate Andy Slaughter.

The by-election in the marginal seat on the fringes of west London is the first test of both Tony Blair's premiership and William Hague's leadership.

It was sparked by the death of Tory MP Sir Michael Shersby just a week after the general election in which he fended off Labour with a slim majority of 724 votes.

Mr Dobson visited Hillingdon Hospital's specialist breast cancer treatment centre and renewed Labour's election promise to spend an extra £10 million on diagnosing and treating the disease.

The Government hopes to find the extra cash from the £100 million it plans to save this year by cutting NHS red tape.

Letting Britain Down

Randall: Government isn't living up to its promises
Meanwhile John Redwood, the Shadow Trade and Industry spokesman and unsuccessful contender for the Conservative party leadership, launched an attack on the Government's failure to live up to expectations.

Speaking in support of the Conservative candidate he accused Labour of going back on their word over education, Europe, the health service, pensions and tax.

"Labour are letting Britain down. Voters now know that Labour are not living up to their promises. That is why voters are turning away from Labour and back to the Conservatives," Mr Redwood said in Uxbridge.
