M-6
Should commercial traffic take precedence?

Motorway Ban Under Consideration

Radical proposals are being considered to ban local motorists in the West Midlands from the M-6 motorway at peak times.

The plan forms part of a series of pilot projects designed to speed the flow of traffic on the heavily congested motorway.

A new government consultation document highlights the need to ease the current problems for long-distance traffic over the busiest section of the motorway. One solution involves preventing local commuters joining the motorway at peak times while still allowing access to commercial traffic.

Government figures obtained by the BBC indicate that junction closures could have a dramatic impact, speeding up traffic and helping reduce the queues.

It is also understood that funds have been secured for the introduction of a system similar to that being used on the M25 around London, where speed limits are imposed as congestion builds up.
