Mohammed Sarwar insists he can clear his name

Procurator Fiscal Examines Report on Labour MP

Strathclyde Police have confirmed that they have compiled a report relating to the Glasgow Govan constituency of Labour MP Mohammed Sarwar. He was suspended by his parliamentary party in June and police began investigating alleged unlawful payments action in the constituency.

The report has gone to the Procurator Fiscal who will decide whether charges will be brought. Police declined to comment on the content of the report - or say if it related to Mr Sarwar himself, or to others in the constituency. Mr Sarwar says he is confident any report will clear his name.

The affair comes on top of the controversy surrounding the suicide of Paisley South MP Gordon McMaster.

Affairs in Govan came to a head after the general election, when millionaire businessman Mr Sarwar became Britain's first Asian Muslim MP.

The constituency then became the focus of claims and counterclaims, some involving defeated minor-party candidates, after a bitterly-fought campaign.

Even before the election there had been acrimony within Labour ranks over who should be put forward as Labour candidate.

The post-election claims included a welter of allegations, one of which prompted Mr Sarwar to launch a libel action against a Sunday newspaper.

Labour called in the Crown Office to investigate, and a party inquiry later recommended restructuring the local party into nine branches rather than three.

Mr Sarwar has told reporters: "I have no knowledge of the contents of the police report. No one from the police has interviewed myself, but I am confident that any report will totally clear me."
