Dr Tonge: accuses the Government of incompetence

Liberal Democrats Demand Emergency Commons Meeting

The Liberal Democrats' international development spokeswoman has called for an urgent meeting to discuss the Montserrat crisis.

Dr Jenny Tonge has written to Donald Anderson, chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, asking him to call an emergency session of the committee to hear evidence on the situation surrounding the British dependency under constant threat of volcanic eruptions.

Dr Tonge said: "The House of Commons does not return from recess until October 27th. By then, the fate of the people of Montserrat could easily have been decided. Government handling of the situation in Montserrat over the last decade has been characterised by misinformation and muddle."

"It is vital that the foreign affairs select committee is given the opportunity to investigate the critical situation on Montserrat," she said.

Dr Tonge is also writing to the Select Committee on International Development to ask for an investigation into the way aid was distributed following a hurricane in 1989.
