Mass Grave Found in Bosnia
In north-western Bosnia, experts have begun exhuming bodies from one of the largest mass graves uncovered since the civil war.
According to Bosnian state television, the remains of several hundred people are believed to be buried near the town of Bihac. The television broadcast images of decomposed bodies and heaps of bones being removed from the grave.
The area around Bihac was the scene of bitter fighting between Muslims and Serbs during the three-and-a-half year conflict. Many people were brutally killed.
A local official in Bihac said that up to 300 Muslim and Croat bodies may
have been buried in the grave. The TV report showed pictures of human remains
said to have been found at the site. It said representatives of the
Hague-based International War Crimes Tribunal would visit the area on Tuesday.
Well over 20,000 Bosnians disappeared during the war. Most are believed to be dead and buried in mass graves.
Many of the graves are believed to be in the Bosnian Serb republic, where there is little will to open them up and reveal the atrocities
committed during the conflict.
Almost two years after the war ended, most of the missing remain unaccounted for, and the vast majority of the mass graves lie untouched.
