News in Brief

The headline rate of inflation has risen for the fourth month in a row. It is now at its highest level for two years. In August, it rose to 3.5% - up 0.2% percent on the previous month. But the underlying rate, which excludes mortgage costs, was down to 2.8%. This fall is expected to confirm the Bank of England's intention to leave interest rates unchanged in the short term.

A fourth Welsh Labour MP has said he will vote against the government's proposals for a Welsh Assembly in the referendum which will follow a week after the one in Scotland. Allan Rogers, who represents Rhondda, said he was bitterly disappointed that the government's proposals did not include the abolition of the system of unelected quangos in Wales. He joins Llew Smith, Sir Ray Powell, and the Swansea MP, Alan Williams, who have also said they will vote "no" next week. The Welsh Secretary, Ron Davies, said he was confident the anti-devolutionists would not have a serious impact on the government's campaign.

The fiancee of the Conservative Party Leader, William Hague - Ffion Jenkins - has a new job. She has been appointed director of operations at the Association for Business Sponsorship of the Arts (Absa). The Association encourages private sector support for the arts; Ms Jenkins will have special responsibility for the Government's arts sponsorship incentive scheme, known as the Pairing Scheme, which matches private donations with public money and is managed by Absa.
