How To Take Good Photos

Buildings: Symmetry

alt text
© TOM ANG
  • Images composed with mirror symmetry, where one side reflects the other, are often visually striking.
  • Many modern buildings make extensive use of reflections to create form and to relate to neighbouring architecture, explore the possibilities offered by the architect.
  • The reflection is usually much darker than the view being reflected, so the challenge is to balance the exposure between the two. Aim to avoid over-exposure of the main scene.
  • In this image of a former linen mill in Ireland, the large windows allow us to feature the building and the access road, giving a sense of abandonment.
