Trivia
Latin bite: Harmony asks, "Is Antonio Banderas a vampire?" Well, he was in
the 1994 film adaptation of Anne Rices Interview With The Vampire: The
Vampire Chronicles, which also starred Tom Cruise. In the film Banderas played Armand, a 400 year-old vampire who runs a theatre, where the vampire killings are passed off as stage illusions.
Waiting for the man: The album that Oz holds up when he says "More important than this one?" is the last Velvet Underground album to actively feature Lou Reed, 1970s
Loaded.
High School days: Continuity references abound in this episode. Harmony and Buffy chat about the "big snake" - a.k.a. Mayor Richard Wilkins III, that spoilt their Graduation Day (part two). It was during the melee at the end of this episode that Harmony was bitten and turned into a vampire.
Anya and Xander began dating in The Prom, though the last time he saw her ("fleeing in terror") was in Graduation Day part one. The now you see it, now you dont scar on Buffys neck was the
result of Angels feeding in Graduation Day part two, and when Buffy tells Parker that she nearly drowned, shes referring back to Prophecy Girl.
They seek it here, they seek it there: The Gem of Amara is apparently a vampire Holy Grail of sorts, meaning an ancient relic whose existence is dubious. In Christian mythology, the Holy Grail was the cup Jesus drank from at the last supper, and is variously said to be hidden on a magic mountain, in the keeping of the Knights Templar, or in a cave in the middle east being threatened by Nazis, if you go by Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
According to Giles, the last big upsurge of vampire interest in the gem was in the tenth century. However, it couldn't be found, probably due to the fact that it was in America, as yet undiscovered by the West.
Dangerous gifts: At the end of this episode there's another nod to the fledgling Buffy spin-off, Angel, when Oz agrees to take the ring to the brooding vamp in LA. To see how that worked out, take a look at our Angel episode guide for In The Dark.
