Episode Guide
Inca Mummy Girl

Trivia

New faces: Inca Mummy Girl sees the first appearance of series regular Oz, played by Seth Green. His laconic manner and interest in Willow are both established during this episode.

Three chord wonders : Oz's band, Dingoes Ate My Baby, are shown playing at the Bronze. The name comes from a famous Australian outback incident, in which Lindy Chamberlain was accused of killing her baby, which had actually been taken by dingoes. The Dingoes' music was provided by band Four Star Mary, with whom James Marsters has occasionally performed.

The Fall Guy: Also introduced in this episode is a recurring victim, played by Danny Strong. The character would later develop into loveable geek Jonathan Levinson.

Strong originally screen-tested for the part of Xander, and despite not getting that, did appear in the test pilot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Even though he only had one line, Danny managed to impress Joss Whedon enough to be asked to return in a semi-recurring role.

Interviewed by Cult, Danny recalled:

"I don't have a lot of memories of shooting the pilot because I was only there for a couple of hours. I couldn't believe it when they called in season two and offered me the role of Jonathan. I thought they had forgotten about me."

The real Ampata: The concept of Inca mummies is a real one, rather just made up as a plot device. Real Inca mummies were preserved both by drying and by cold and since 1995 many have been found. The first mummy discovered was dubbed Juanita, and obviously inspired the character of Ampata. Even her name is taken from Mount Anpato, where Juanita was found.

Xander snacks: Ampata is introduced to the Twinkie for the first time by Xander. This popular US snack food "contains no ingredients that a human can pronounce" according to him. This is entirely untrue as a major ingredient of Twinkies is sugar. For the full list of ingredients, see the BBC's H2G2 site's Twinkies entry.

Sartorial choice: Lederhosen apparently make Xander's calves look fat. So we know he's tried them, then.

Too lucky? Astounded by his luck at attracting the lovely Ampata, Xander suddenly worries that there might be a catch. "You're not a praying mantis?" he asks her, referencing the season one episode Teacher's Pet.

Well Sven : Cordelia's exchange student comes as a grave disappointment to her. Swedish Sven may be "one hundred percent gorgeous", but she doesn't think his conversation's up to much. Apparently he doesn't "even speak American". The last laugh's on her though, as away from her bossing, Sven is revealed as a likeable and chatty chap.

Clint Harris : Xander dresses as a Spaghetti Western hero for the costume party, a fact he refers to when he claims to come from "the country of Leone. It's in Italy, pretending to be Montana." Sergio Leone was a director of classic Westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars.
