Trivia

Wild about Harry: Harry Groener reprises his role as Mayor Richard Wilkins III for the second time this season, after a blink-and-you'll miss it appearance in Lessons. Since season three, Harry - who was born in Augsberg, Bavaria, by the way - has appeared in such films as Road to Perdition and About Schmidt, plus, ironically, TV series The Mayor. He's also guest-starred in cult series such as Roswell and Malcolm in the Middle.

Little Women: The mayor is a fan of Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women. It's the story of four sisters - Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth - and their progress towards womanhood whilst their father is away fighting in the American Civil war. Written in 1867, it's actually a fictionalised biography of Alcott and her sisters and has become a much loved classic tale. The Mayor's favourite amongst the sisters is Meg.

Replicated dialogue: Spike's "I've seen things you couldn't imagine" comment echoes a similar quote from fellow bleach blonde baddie Roy Batty, the android played by Rutger Hauer in seminal sci fi flick Blade Runner. In a scene that has become a movie classic, Batty tells Harrison Ford's cop: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

Well heeled: Wood refers to the First's Achilles heel, which is slang for someone's weak spot. Achilles was the bravest hero in the Trojan war, according to Greek mythology. When he was born, his mother tried to make him immortal by dipping him in the river Styx.

As she immersed him, she held him by one heel and forgot to dip him a second time so the heel she held could get wet too. Therefore, the place where she held him remained untouched by the magic water of the Styx and that part stayed vulnerable.

Buffy axed: If you're into comics and have been following Joss Whedon's work outside of Buffy, the axe at the end of the episode may look a little familiar. It's the one used by future Slayer Melaka Fray in the comic book miniseries of the same name. Whilst stunt replicas sold for big money when Fox auctioned them on Ebay, Joss kept the original prop. It probably comes in very handy around the garden.

Talking Turkey: The spell that Willow uses on the Bringer is spoken in Turkish. It translates as: "Eyeless man speak to us. The man without eyes speak to us."

Super Nova: The music playing while everyone is getting some action (or probably not if it's early evening BBC2) is It's Only Love by Heather Nova from her album South.
