Bandana

Bandanas

Or headbands, as normal people would call them.

From the moment Mr Miyagi tied an Oriental-style bandana around Ralph Macchio's head in The Karate Kid, it became obligatory to wear a headband to perform martial arts.

Most made do with a dressing gown cord tied around their heads, but for those with more affluent parents (or who were emotionally stunted enough to still desire the look when they were earning money for themselves), a stunning silk or cotton headband could be purchased from specialist stores.

These would be inscribed with Mandarin characters that translated as 'inner strength', 'bravery' or 'Chi' according to the wearer, but translated as 'Wally' or 'Berk' to everyone else.
