Aint-it-cool-news.com recently caught up with Jane Espenson, the writer credited with twenty-two episodes of Buffy - a record only beaten by Joss Whedon and Marti Noxon. Warning - season seven spoilers ahead!
The hot topic was, of course, the future of Buffy, and whether there was ever any talk of doing a spin-off series.
"I think Marti [Noxon] talked with Joss about Slayer School and Tim Minear talked with him about Faith on a motorcycle," said Jane. "I assume there was some back-and-forth pitching. None of the rest of us got involved, except for that moment once a day when I'd yell out, 'Maybe Jonathan isn't all that dead! He could get better!'"
Jane reveals that although she's tied to working solely on the Gilmore Girls for the next year, after that she hopes to pursue her dream of getting her own show on the air:
"I've been dipping my brain into the waters of the pilot-fountain more and more these days, and I have a few notions that I'm starting to love. Some are in the Buffy mould, in that they've got extra-normal elements that symbolise ordinary life metaphorically. Others are more realistic. If I create a show, it would be an hour and it would be funny. At least, it would be intended to be funny... whether you actually laugh is up to you."
Jane also tells all about exactly what made her fall in love with Buffy, what her favourite sitcom and shows of all time are, all about her script for Buffy: The Animated Series, and her work on the Gilmore Girls.
