The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Three
Separate Vocations

Career choices cause classroom chaos.

Episode 8F15
Written by George Meyer
Directed by Jeffrey Lynch
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor, Tress MacNeille
Special guest voice: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel), Steve Allen (as the Alternate B art)

Premise: The students of Springfield Elementary sit the Career Aptitude Normalising Test - or CANT. A mix-up in the results sends Bart on a run with the Springfield Police, and dooms Lisa to the life of a home-maker. Bart discovers that a man in uniform can get away with anything, while Lisa becomes a cosmetics-abusing, gum-chewing rebel without a cause.

Features: Ms Krabappel, Sherri and Terri, Milhouse, Miss Hoover, Janey, Richard, Lewis, Wendell, Martin Prince, Ralph, Lou, Eddie, Mrs Winfield, Mayor Quiinby, Sideshow Mel, Apu, Snake, Chief Wiggum, Patty, Selma, Principal Skinner, Groundskeeper Willie, Jimbo Jones, Kearney, Dolph, Mr Largo.

Couch: Bart jumps across the other Simpsons.

Trivia:

  • CANT results predict that Janey is to be an architect, Milhouse a military strongman, and Martin a systems analyst - his dream job.

Homage: After the first ad break in this episode, a caption comes up, proclaiming ACT II- DEATH DRIVES A STICK, in homage to the TV series The Streets of San Francisco and numerous other Quinn Martin-produced crime shows. The car chase comes straight from the classic Bullitt (Peter Yates, 1968). The Wild One (Laslo Benedek, 1954) supplies Lisa's answer to Miss Hoover's question 'What are you rebelling against?'

Look out for: The heavily loaded questions in the CANT test.

Notes: The Simpsons at its best - not only hilarious but daringly outspoken on a whole range of issues - the failures of the education system, police abuses of power, the stifling of children's creativity...
