The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Four
Selma's Choice

Aunty Selma tests her maternal instincts - to destruction.

Episode 9F11
Written by David Stern
Directed by Carlos Baeza
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Doris Grau
Special guest voice: Phil Hartman (as Lionel Hutz)

Premise: After the death of Gladys Bouvier, Selma begins to hanker after having children. When Homer falls ill - he's been eating a week-old foot-long hoagie - she tests her suitability as a family woman by taking Bart, Lisa and Maggie to Duff Gardens - where Bart is nearly decapitated and Lisa falls under the spell of a dangerous narcotic.

Features: Patty, Selma, Jackie Bouvier, Lionel Hutz, Groundskeeper Willie, Hans Moleman, Eddie, Lou, Jimbo Jones, Dolph, Kearney, Barney Gumble, Carl.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - and are netted.

Trivia:

  • The Springfield Sperm Bank was established in 1858.

Homage: Marge is aware how ill Homer has become when he says he actually wants to watch Yentl (Barbra Streisand, 1983). Marge's flashback to an idyllic family swim recalls Prince of Tides (Barbra Streisand, 1991). Lisa's drug-induced behaviour at Duff Gardens - 'I Am the Lizard Queen!' - recalls Jim Morrison of the Doors, who claimed to be Lizard King. The episode plays out with Carole King's Natural Woman.

Look out for: Maggie's reaction when Selma announces she wants a baby. Bart's beer glasses.

Song: Lou Reed's 1972 hit Walk on the Wild Side sung by sanitised teensters Hooray For Everything.

Notes: 'The legend of the dog-faced woman!' A nice episode for Selma and good for Marge and Homer as well. But it's the kids who provide the highlights in this one, with their antics at Duff Gardens.
