The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Five
Cape Feare

The Simpsons change identity to hide from Sideshow Bob.

Episode 9F22
Written by Jon Vitti
Directed by Rich Moore
Also starring: Pamela Hayden
Special guest voice: Kelsey Grammer (as Sideshow Bob)

That title in full: Cape Feare (Not Affiliated with the Film "Cape Fear") Premise: 'Die, Bart, die!' Sideshow Bob gets parole - and he's out for revenge on this century's Dennis the Menace. The Simpsons must flee from Springfield to Terror Lake and become the Thompsons - if Bart's going to stand a chance...

Features: Wolfcastle, Milhouse, Nelson, Marty at KBBL, Sideshow Bob, Ned Flanders, Ms Krabappel, Martin, Chief Wiggum, Lou and Eddie, Moe, Snake, Patty and Selma, Grampa, Jasper.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - and form part of a chorus line.

Homage: Principally Cape Fear (J. Lee Thompson, 1962) and its remake (Martin Scorsese, 1991). Several scenes are recycled wholesale, in particular Bob stalking the Simpsons in the cinema and hiding himself under the Thompsons' car. Homer surprising Bart with his new hockey mask recalls Friday 13th Part II (Steve Miner, 1981).

Notes for Brits: Sideshow Bob is writing to a column in the American Reader's Digest called Life In These United States.

Moe's secrets: He has a secret cache of pandas behind the tavern.

Notes: One of the very best, well remembered for the alternative opening sequence to 'The Thompsons', the luckless Sideshow Bob's encounter with seventeen (count 'em) rakes, and Homer's FBI Witness Relocation Programme T-shirt and baseball cap.
