Episode 3F15
Written by Jack Barth
Directed by Mark Kirkland
Additional cast: Phil Hartman (as Troy McClure), Pamela Hayden
Special guest voice: Jeff Goldblum (as McArthur Parker)
Premise: Troy McClure's career is looking up at last. All he has to do to satisfy Hollywood's casting agents is quash the speculation about his personal life. And that means marriage. And marriage means Selma.
Features: Troy McClure, Chief Wiggum, Patty and Selma, Grampa, Dr Hibbert, Lenny, Carl, Spotty Boy, Moe, Krusty, Kent Brockman, Mrs Bouvier, Rev. Lovejoy, Mayor Quimby, Apu.
Couch: The Simpsons have become sparking clockwork toys. But they manage to reach the sofa - except Homer.
Trivia:
- One of Troy's movies is playing on TV in the Movie For A Rained-Out Ball Game slot.
- At the Pimento Grove restaurant, we see celebrity photographs of Krusty and Rainier Wolfcastle (from the Springfield universe) and previous special guest voice artists including Liz Taylor, Bette Midler, Leonard Nimoy, Barry White, Sting, James Woods and Phil Collins (among others).
- Next to its feature on Troy, the Springfield Shopper carries an article about Wolfcastle titled 'Look Who's Drunk'.
Homage: The Muppets are very well satirised in a sequence featuring Miss Piggy and Kermit. Selma's romantic cigarette play with Troy recalls Now, Voyager (Irving Rapper, 1942), and the musical version of Planet of the Apes (Franldin J. Schaffner, 1968) contains a parody of Falco's 1984 hit Rock Me Amadeus. The episode's title refers to A Fish Called Wanda (Charles Crichton, 1988), in connection with the rumours about Troy McClure's bizarre sex life that have dogged his career.
Hi, I'm Troy McClure, you may remember me from: Such films as: The Muppets Go Medieval (1977) co-starring Dyan Cannon, The Greatest Story Ever Hulaed, They Came to Burgle Carnegie Hall, Meet Joe Blow, Give My Remains to Broadway, The Verdict Was Mail Fraud, Leper in the Back Field, Astronaut Gemini 3, Incident at Noon, My Darling Beefeater, Locker Room Towel Fight: The Blinding of Harry Driscoll, The Electric Gigolo, and The Contrabulous Fabtraption of Professor Hufnagel. And he stars in the play Stop the Planet of the Apes I Want to Get Off and is up for a part in McBain IV- Fatal Discharge.
Song: Dr Zaius, Dr Zaius sung by Troy and the cast of Stop the Planet of the Apes.
Notes: Troy McClure gets a starring role at last. We finally discover - nearly - the reason for his stalled career, get to see his revolving dome home, and learn of his emotional inadequacies (at least where human females are concerned). This episode fits into the Selma-marriage sub-genre, and her previous unhappy alliances are referred to at the wedding.
