The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Nine
Dumbbell Indemnity

Love costs Moe, and Homer, dear.

Episode 5F12
Written by Ron Hauge
Directed by Dominic Polcino
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille
Special guest voices: Marcia Wallace (as Woman in Bar), Helen Hunt (as Rene)

Premise: Desperate for a life outside his bar, Moe lets Homer take him to a singles' bar where he gets ignored at all turns. But on the way home, they meet Rene, who starts dating Moe. Unfortunately, before long, Moe has maxed out his Players Club credit card and decides to claim the insurance on his car. Trouble is, he relies on Homer to steal and destroy it for him.

Features: Carl, Lenny, Moe, Barney, barflies, Chief Wiggum, Lou, Eddie, Groundskeeper Willie, Otto, Snake, Rainier Wolfcastle, Hans Moleman.

Couch: The Simpsons are caught in a car-crusher.

Trivia:

  • Homer's prison number is 5F124670: note the production number of this episode.
  • Homer watches Hail to the Chimp at the drive-in movie.
  • When Moe and Rene date, the soundtrack is I'm a Believer, a 1967 hit for The Monkees.

Homage: Double Indemnity (Billy Wilder, 1944) is all about an insurance scam, but in that case, it was murder.

Mmmmm: ...me.

Look out for: The woman who snubs Moe in the bar at the beginning looks curiously like the woman his spin-off double met in The Simpson's Spin-Off Showcase.

Notes: A case perhaps of life reflecting art as guest star Helen Hunt is now married to Hank Azaria, who is, of course, Moe, which is rather nice as you can't help but feel sad that, by the end of this rather clever and charming episode, Moe has been unlucky in love once more.
