The writing system Portuguese is written with the Roman alphabet, with additional diacritics (or accents) to indicate features such as nasalized vowels (razo) and stress (e.g. esprito). As part of a modernization programme, the orthography was reformed in Portugal in 1916; small additional changes have been made since that time with the co-operation of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
