This week's news for kids

Thursday 3rd February 2011

UK Bulletin

Hi there, I'm Ricky from Newsround. It's Thursday the 3rd of February.

First up - an update from Cairo in Egypt, where it's estimated that eight people have died, and nearly a thousand more have been injured in the most recent violent clashes. Protestors who are trying to get the President Hosni Mubarak to step down, say the leader is paying people to attack them, but Mubarak's supporters say that's not true. The army are trying to keep the two groups separate from each other to prevent any more violence, but there are calls for another big day of protests tomorrow.

Next to Australia where Cyclone Yasi hit Queensland late yesterday. This local from Cardwell described what he saw after the cyclone hit...

CLIP: "As you drive down the highway, there's one spot there where there's a refrigerator and a washing machine all up in the bush, in the trees!"

Luckily so far, it looks as though no one was killed or seriously injured in the storm because a massive evacuation took place before the storm hit. But there has been a lot of damage in its path, with houses destroyed and massive waves causing boats to be piled up on the shore.

Next a bit of sport news....

CLIP: "Is this the moment for Luis Suarez? Off the line and it's lift off for Luis Suarez!"

Liverpool's new signing Luis Suarez showed why the club paid 23 million pounds to pinch him from Ajax, scoring on his debut in a 2-nil win against Stoke City.

Next, bad news for chocolate lovers - Cadbury is cutting the size of its Dairy Milk bar. The company say they've had to down-size the bars because if it didn't the price would have to go up. The ingredients in chocolate have been steadily increasing, so now a 140 gram bar of Dairy Milk, which costs 99 pence will be reduced to 120 grams and have two fewer squares.

And finally...

CLIP: "Bieber! Bieber! Bieber!"

Justine Bieber fans turned out in force last night for the New York premier of his new film. It's all about how Justine went from being an internet hit - to a global superstar!

OK that's all from us, we're back tomorrow. Bye bye for now.

World Bulletin

Hi there, I'm Ore from the BBC World News for Schools. It's Thursday the 3rd of February.

Coming up:

Violent clashes overnight in Egypt.

Liverpool's new boy gets off to a flying start.

And Justin Bieber's movie gets its New York premiere.

First - In Egypt, officials say five people have been killed and more than 800 injured after a night of intense fighting in the capital, Cairo. Supporters of the President - Hosni Mubarak clashed with protesters who want him to resign after almost 30 years in power.

CLIP: FX of clashes.

The army say they are working to keep the two groups apart, but this protestor says they are not stopping peaceful protestors from being attacked....

CLIP: " When violence took place the army didn't do anything. People were shooting guns at the anti-Mubarak protestors and the army were just shooting guns in the air to kind of scare those who have guns away."

Some demonstrators say the President's paying people to crush the protests against him - but his supporters say that's not true.

Elsewhere in the Middle East there's been a big demonstration in Yemen, against the President Ali Abdullah Saleh - with more that 20,000 taking to the streets of the country's capital city in protest.

Next up, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in Australia has hit the state of Queensland, with 300 km an hour winds ripping along the states north coast. Luckily, no one is reported to have been seriously injured, but two people are missing and it was a pretty scary night for people in worst hit towns - like Penny Gross from Ravenshoe...

CLIP: "It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. The roaring sound was like nothing on Earth. You hear bang and crash and trees going over and it's pitch black because the power's out."

Footie news now and Liverpool may have said goodbye to Fernando Torres, but if Luis Suarez debut performance is anything to go by, they could have a new star player....

CLIP: "Is this the moment for Louis Suarez? Off the line and lift off for Louis Suarez!"

The new signing came off the bench to score in a 2-nil win against Stoke City, making his new boss, Kenny Dalglish pretty happy....

CLIP: "For Louis Suarez to score in his first game, it will not do him any harm what so ever. I think we've got a bit of exitement to look forward to."

Screaming fans crammed onto the streets of New York last night to catch a glimpse of Justin Bieber. There was a special screening of his new movie. It's all about his journey from internet hit to global superstar. These fans were pretty happy!

CLIP: "I love Justin Bieber because when he sings it makes me happy." "If his limo turns up, maybe we can run over there, perhaps get a little sneaky close-up."

Before we go we just have time to tell you that it's Chinese new year. According to the Chinese calendar that means it's the year of a certain animal, but which one? Yesterday we asked you how many centuries there are in a millennium and the answer is......10!

OK, that's all from the World News for Schools team. We're back tomorrow.
