"This is a composite photo of the interior of Mull distillery. My grandfather used to be minister at the church just round the corner from it, and I was originally going to shoot that. However, upon arrival in Mull I realised that whisky is 'thicker than blood' and hit the distillery instead.
This portrait of Tom Ang - who just happened to be passing by with his camera - is a composite of seven different photographs. To get this right I used one flash and a radio slave, several exposures and a lot of running up and downstairs. I would usually have done this in one go with lots of assistants working the flashes for me. As there was only me I moved the flash each time I took a shot - lighting individual areas - and stitched them all together on the computer when I got home. I prefer it in black and white as the pipes seem to dominate the picture when it's in colour."
