[Played by Anthony Stewart Head]
Rupert Giles attended college in Oxford, where he fell into dubious company, and began practising in the black arts, before following the family tradition and becoming a Watcher. Before being sent to Sunnydale to supervise Buffys training, Giles (as he is usually known) worked in "a British museum". His job as the school librarian affords plenty of opportunity to immerse himself in ancient tomes of prophecy, unravelling the obscure riddles which might help protect his protg. Giles was assigned to Buffy when her previous Watcher was killed, and she was forced to relocate. Although they have a quirky relationship, their loyalty and respect for each other is obvious.
Giles is not a natural fighter, but has demonstrated incredible fortitude under extremely trying circumstances. A shy romantic, his slow-burning relationship with colleague Jenny Calendar belied a passionate soul. Giles is often the groups mediator, and is certainly the voice of authority. A man of hidden talents, (he speaks five languages, and plays the guitar), Giles is best not underestimated.
Blessed with a typically dry, British, sense of humour and irony, Giles is often bewildered by the students hip lingo, but his time with the Slayerettes has surely mellowed him. He was distraught when Angel killed Jenny. His distrust of Angel intensified after the vampire tortured him (in 'Becoming Part II'). Giles and Joyce have a guilty secret after succumbing to their raging hormones, under the influence of Ethan Raynes mind-altering chocolate, (something Buffy doesnt discover until she reads her mothers mind, in 'Earshot').
After refusing to endanger Buffys life in a training exercise, Giles was suspended from duty by the Watchers Council ('Helpless'). Currently he is still helping Buffy, on an informal basis, and assists his replacement, Wesley, by giving him the benefit
of his considerable experience..
Anthony Stewart Head is probably best known for a series of instant coffee commercials, which ran on both sides of the Atlantic. Hes worked extensively in the US and the UK, in series as diverse as 'NYPD Blue' and 'Jonathan Creek'. He was a series regular in 'VR.5', and played Frank N. Furter in a London stage production of 'The Rocky Horror Show'.
Last year he appeared in a TV movie for HBO, 'Best Actress', a pitch black comedy about an actress who is prepared to kill to get an Academy Award. He will soon be seen in 'Metal God', about an office supplies salesman who gets a chance to
be in a rock group.
