Red, Green and Gold

Red, green and gold - the colours of Jamaica

Red, Green and Gold

The dress code of the Rastafarian involves wearing clothes made from natural fibres. The ceremonial colour is white but the colours of the Ethiopian flag, red, green and gold can be found in much of what is worn. The 'tam' or hat is one of the most important items of Rastafarian dress as it holds the dreadlocks.

The origins of the colours come from the Rastafari religion practiced on the island. Haile Selassie, Ras (Prince) Tafari of Ethiopia is treated as a divine figure represented by the three colours. "Grounation Day" has been celebrated by Rastafarians ever since his arrival in the country in 1966 to foster ties between Jamaica and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Haile Selassie is revered to this day and many Rastafarians refuse to believe in his reported death in 1975.

Rastafarians believe in their sacramental right to smoke Ganja (marijuana), have dreadlocks and to wear a beard!
