The direction of Dancehall music in Jamaica changed with the declining
economic circumstances of the time. Lyrics turned from political,
social or historical comment to more traditional 'dancehall' themes
intertwined with 'slackness' or sexually explicit lyrics. Rhythms
also moved to reflect what had previously been popular in the dancehalls.
Another development alongside the dancehall sound was the exploration
of new dance moves. Women especially found new ways of expressing
themselves on the dance floor with increasingly daring movements.
What women were wearing on the dance floors also took on a new twist,
becoming more revealing (see Dancehall
fashion.)
