Cool Runnings

A Jamaican bobsleigh team?

Cool Runnings

Believe it or not push carting is very popular in Jamaica. It starts with the local police youth community which run parish and colt events culminating in national championships.

William Maloney and George Finch, two Americans were discussing the sport and decided that it had similarities to bobsleighing and they set about finding a Jamaica team for the Winter Olympics. In 1988, Jamaica entered it's first team in the Olympics, although finishing 35th after a crash, it was still a notable achievement.

Only 6 years later, in Lillehammer, Norway, Jamaica smashed into the bobsleigh elite with an amazing 14th position.

Not to be outdone, Hollywood then jumped on the 'cart' with the hit film Cool Runnings, the story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team, staring the late but great John Candy, and Doug E Doug.
