RealMedia: Miss World 1976

Cindy Breakspeare

Cindy Breakspeare broke the World Order of the Miss World Contest when she was crowned in the 1976 event. She blew away the beauty pageant giving Jamaicans a great sense of pride.

It was a controversial year, as none of the sixty-nine countries withdrew from the contest as a political protest against South Africa being allowed to enter, due to its politics. However Jamaica remained, and a twenty-three year old model from the country shot to fame and fortune. The prize money for the event was 5,000, although there were other lucrative deals on offer.

By this time a romance between Cindy and Bob Marley had blossomed, and by 1978 they had a son Damien. Damien Jr "Gong" Marley still carries on his father's legacy and won a Grammy for best reggae album 'Halfway Tree' in 2002.
