Three tales of horror to chill the blood.
Episode 7F04
Written by Jay Kogen, Wallace Wolodarsky, John Swartzwelder, Edgar Allan Poe and Sam Simon
Directed by Wes Archer, Rich Moore, David Silverman
Special guest voice: James Earl Jones (as the Narrator, the Mover, and Serak the Preparer)
Also known as: Treehouse of Horror
Premise: It's Hallowe'en - and in Bart's treehouse it's time to share tales of terror. In Bad Dream House the Simpsons move into a haunted house. In Hungry are The Damned they are abducted by ravenous aliens. And in The Raven Homer mourns the loss of his beloved Lenore.
And introducing: Kodos, Kang.
Tombstones: Ishmael Simpson, Ezekiel Simpson, Cornelius V. Simpson (all three of these are American politicians or historical figures), Garfield, The Grateful Dead, Casper The Friendly Boy, Elvis, Your Name Here, Paul McCartney,
Disco.
Homage: The haunted house segment owes a lot to The Exorcist (William Friedkin, 1973) - Maggie's revolving head, Poltergeist (Tobe Hooper, 1982) - the reference to the house being built on the site of an Indian burial ground, and The Amityville Horror (Stuart Rosenberg, 1979) - the bleeding walls, while the Rigellian plan for humanity recalls the Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man. The Raven is an almost direct transcription of Edgar Allan Poe's poem of lost love and ghastly redemption.
Notes: The first two segments work better than the third, but this is a marvellous episode, and set a high standard for the Hallowe'en specials to come.
