Premise: Homer's attempts to grow more hair increase his confidence. He's aided by a new secretary, the passionate Karl. All Karl needs to do now is prove to Homer that his success is a result of self-confidence and genuine hard work, not new hair. And then there's a vengeful Smithers to deal with...

• Mr Burns is 81.

Homage: Homer runs out into the streets to spread the news of his hair's return in a lifted scene from It's a Wonderful Life (Frank Capra, 1946). His entry into the executive washroom closely parallels a scene in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (Frank Tashlin, 1957).

Notes for Brits: Karl's line, 'Don't Judge Me, Love Me', is a slogan of the American gay rights movement. Mr Burns refers to Du Mont TV, a short-lived US TV network from the 1950s.

Look out for: The reading of Karl's letter - an obvious gag, but a good one.

Notes: This episode is brought to life by the superb character of Karl, helped no doubt by Harvey Fierstein's unique vocal drawl. Sadly Homer loses out at the end, but for a brief moment, he achieves glory. The glory of Mr Burns' executive washroom is another highlight.
