The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Three
Mr Lisa Goes to Washington

Corruption in government? Shock horror!

Episode 8F01
Written by George Meyer
Directed by Wes Archer
Also starring: JoAnn Harris, Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell
Special guest voice: Lona Williams

Premise: Lisa wins a speech competition run by the Reading Digest with her entry The Patriots of Tomorrow - and heads for Washington. When she uncovers corruption at the highest levels of the Capitol, she alters her speech to reflect her disgust - and stirs trouble.

Features: Nelson, Lenny, Carl, Jasper, Barney, Moe.

Couch: The family rush in - and sit on Santa's Little Helper.

Trivia:

  • The Simpsons' address is given here as 94 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, TA 192005.
  • There's a film poster advertising Creature with a Shovel featuring Troy McClure.
  • Homer reads the articles Can We Trust Bermuda?, They Call Me Dr Soybeans and Motoring Mishaps in Reading Digest.
  • We see the Springfield state seal for the first time in this episode.

Homage: Lisa's exposure of corruption mirrors the events of Mr Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra, 1939).

Notes: One of the best Lisa-centric episodes, with her talk with Jefferson and her nightmare vision of politicians as pigs especially worthy of note.
