The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Three
Like Father, Like Clown

Tears of a clown for Krusty.

Episode 8F05
Written by Jay Kogen and Wallace Wolodarsky
Directed by Jeffrey Lynch with Brad Bird
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Doris Grau, Tress MacNeille
Special guest voices: Jackie Mason (as Rabbi Hyman Krustofski)

Premise: Disowned by his father Rabbi Krustofski, Krusty sinks into a spiral of drink and depression. Can Bart and Lisa find a way to convince Rabbi Krustofski to accept his estranged son?

Features: Krusty, Sideshow Mel, Apu, Milhouse, Rev. Lovejoy, Moe, Barney.

Couch: Bart runs on late and lies across the rest of the family.

Trivia:

  • Bart is Krusty Buddy #13602.
  • The Springfield X cinema is showing: For Your Thighs Only, Crocodile Done Me and Doctor Strangepants.
  • Among the magazines on sale in the shop are: Ballooning Monthly, Cooking With Coconut Magazine, Faberge Egg Owner, Ballpoint Pen Digest and Modern Jewish Father.
  • The KBBL religious radio show featuring Rabbi Krustofski and Rev. Lovejoy is called Gabbin' About God.
  • Lisa's research into the Jewish people leads her to the books The Big Book of the Church People, Jewishness Revisited and Views on Jews.

Homage: This episode draws heavily on The Jazz Singer (Richard Fleischer, 1980) for its main theme of a Jewish father disowning his son for going into showbusiness. The song played at the end is 0 Mein Papa, a 1952 hit for Eddie Fisher.

Itchy and Scratchy in: Field of Screams.

Notes: A magnificent show, with Jackie Mason wonderfully over the top as Krusty's long-lost pa, and Lois Penny-candy giving Krusty a good talking to about Bart. The shared directors' credit is presumably because a lot of footage from Krusty Gets Busted is included, and that episode was directed by Brad Bird.
