The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Three
The Simpsons Hallowe'en Special II

Further tales from Springfield's dark side.

Episode 8F02
Written by Al Jean and Mike Reiss, Jeff Martin, George Meyer, Sam Simon, John Swartzwelder
Directed by Jim Reardon
Additional cast: Maggie Roswell
Special guest voice: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel)

Also known as: Treehouse of Horror II

Premise: Homer, Lisa and Bart ignore Marge's warnings, and consume a haul of candy obtained from trick-or-treating. Three nightmares commence... Lisa dreams of the Monkey's Paw, which grants its owners four wishes; Bart dreams of possessing awesome mental powers; and Homer dreams of being replaced by a robot with his own brain.

Features: Kent Brockman, Jimbo, Kearney, Otto, Helen Lovejoy, Moe, Krusty, Kodos and Kang, Quimby, Apu, Jasper, Principal Skinner, Ms Krabappel, Barney, the two barflies, Dr Marvin Monroe, Smithers, Mr Burns, Lenny, Carl, Groundskeeper Willie.

Tombstones: Bambi's Mom, Jim Morrison, Cajun Cooking, Walt Disney, Lose Weight Now Ask Me How.

Trivia:

  • Homer tries to smuggle a Honk if you're Moroccan bumper sticker through customs.
  • Simpsons merchandise in Lisa's nightmare includes the album The Simpsons Go Calypso! (available on CD and 8-track cartridge), a Bart T-shirt (price $18), and Bart's Get a Mammogram, Man public health campaign.
  • It looks like the head of Jebediah Springfield's statue wasn't very well glued back on after The Tell-Tale Head.

Homage: The horse's head in Lisa's bed is similar to The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola, 1972). Marge's hair recalls Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale, 1932). The big influence is The Twilight Zone TV series; the episodes A Small Talent for War and It's a Good Life form the basis for Lisa's and Bart's dreams respectively. It's a Good Life was remade as part of Twilight Zone - The Movie (Various, 1983). There are also references to the seventies Charlie Brown TV cartoons - the crowd of trick-or-treaters at the start of the episode, and The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939) - Mr Burns' scolding of his robot creation. Homer's attempt to smuggle the Monkey's Paw into America by taping it to his body and his discovery by customs guards, recalls the attempt to smuggle drugs out of Turkey in Midnight Express (Alan Parker, 1978). We draw a blank on the identity of the baker in Lisa's nightmare.

Mmmmm: ...sprinkles.

Hello, can I speak to: I'm A Stupid Moron With An Ugly Face And A Big Butt And My Butt Smells And I Like To Kiss My Own Butt.

Moe's secrets: He carries a sawn-off shotgun.

Notes: A marked improvement on the first, uneven Hallowe'en special. All three tales succeed, with Bart's nightmare of gaining awesome powers being perhaps the most successful.
