Can a Simpson become Miss Springfield?
Episode 9F02
Written by Jeff Martin
Directed by Mark Kirkland
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, JoAnn Harris, Doris Grau, Lona Williams
Special guest voice: Bob Hope (as himself)
Premise: Lisa has a caricature sketched - and its exaggeration of her unusual features convinces her of her ugliness. To boost her confidence, Homer enters her for the local beauty pageant. But can Lisa hope to compete with a Shirley Temple lookalike who has had eyelash implants in Paraguay? And will her social conscience allow her to compete in a contest that uses the slogan God Bless Mummy and Daddy and Laramie Cigarettes?
Features: Principal Skinner, Chief Wiggum, Groundskeeper Willie, Mayor Quimby, Martin Prince, Nelson Muntz, Otto, Milhouse, Jimbo Jones, Kearney, Dolph, Dr Hibbert, Ned Flanders, Maude Flanders, Todd Flanders, Rod Flanders, Grampa, Moe, Apu, Sanjay, Barney, Krusty.
Couch: Maggie is seated but the others run off the film strip, into nothingness and then back to the sofa.
Trivia:
- Lisa's tryout hairstyles include a Princess Leia look, as well as a miniature Marge-look.
- The Springfield Waxworks' Chamber of Horrors contains Mr T, Ronald Reagan and Dr Ruth.
Homage: The escape from Fort Springfield is taken detail-for-detail from Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979). The song Bumpy Boy is a close cousin to the Seekers' 1966 smash Georgie Girl. Kent Brockman's cry of 'Oh, the humanity...' recalls the commentary of the Hindenberg airship crash disaster.
Mmmmm: (No food named, but Homer is polishing off a jar
of petroleum jelly!)
Notes: Krusty gets some of his best lines in a few brief appearances. Another top-notch episode.
