The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Four
Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie

Bart tries to beat the ban on going to the movies.

Episode 9F03
Written by John Swartzwelder
Directed by Rich Moore
Additional cast: Pamela Hayden, Maggie Roswell
Special guest voice: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel)

Premise: Bart's behaving very badly. After some prompting from fretful Marge, Homer comes up with the ultimate punishment - Bart can never see Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie (53% original footage), the animated movie that will be the defining moment for his generation.

Features: Grampa, Groundskeeper Willie, Miss Hoover, Ms Krabappel, Jasper, Krusty, Bumblebee Man, Kent Brockman, Chief Wiggum, Snake, Milhouse, Nelson, Lou and Eddie, Ned and Rod Flanders, Otto, Lewis, Wendell.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - and the sofa deflates.

Trivia:

  • Homer chooses a seventies' style Fab lolly from the ice-cream van.
  • In Marge's nightmare of Bart's future, Sherri and Terri are among the audience at the strip show.
  • According to Lisa, the Itchy & Scratchy Movie features voice cameos by Dustin Hoffman and Michael Jackson ('they didn't use their real names but you could tell it was them').
  • The future cinema still has a photo of young Bart inside the ticket booth.

Homage: The Star Trek movie series (we get to see the start of Star Trek XII - So Very Tired). Scratchy's premiere appearance owes much to Mickey Mouse's debut, Steamboat Willie (1928). Yummy Yummy Yummy was a hit for Ohio Express in 1968. Soylent Green (Richard Fleischer, 1973) tells the story of a futuristic foodstuff made from human bodies.

Itchy and Scratchy in: Scratchy's first appearance was solo in 1928's That Happy Cat. Their first cartoon together was 1929's Steamboat Itchy. During the war they teamed up against Hitler in an unnamed cartoon.

Mmmmm: ...Burger. (As in ex-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Warren Burger.) And ...soylent green.

Notes: There's some defining dumb Homer stuff in this superb episode - his suggestion for punishing Bart's misbehaviour is to give him a present, and his trick for avoiding jury duty is 'to say you're prejudiced against all races'.
