Bart realises the principles of a good education.
Episode 1F18
Written by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein
Directed by Bob Anderson
Also starring: Doris Grau, Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell
Special guest voice: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel)
Premise: Skinner is fired by Superintendent Chalmers, and Flanders is installed as the new Principal. Skinner is alone and friendless - until Bart realises he needs an enemy in order to define his own personality...
Features: Grampa, Otto, Ralph, Martin, Nelson, Ms Krabappel, Milhouse, Groundskeeper Willie, Lunchlady Doris, Miss Hoover, Principal Skinner, Superintendent Chalmers, Ned Flanders, Kearney, Jimbo, Doiph, Apu, Mrs Skinner.
Couch: The Simpsons rush in - and Homer takes very unkindly to the FOX station logo in the corner of the screen.
Trivia:
- Ned Flanders' parents make their first appearance - they were to return in the episode Hurricane Neddie.
Homage: The episode's title refers to the controversial blaxploitation movie Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (Melvin van Peebles, 1971). Skinner's use of a heat-seeking tracer to pin down the positions of Groundskeeper Willie and Santa's Little Helper within the school's ventilation system is a lift from Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979).
Notes for Brits: Joey Heatherton is an actress who appeared on numerous US celebrity panel games in the seventies.
Notes: Poor Skinner. The 100th episode - that explains the blackboard joke - is a fine one, with Principal Skinner's idea for a novel and the conduct of the staff at the Italian restaurant as highpoints.
