Premise: 'A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man' - the inspirational words of town founder Jebediah Springfield. As bicentennial celebrations loom, and Homer gets a job as Town Crier, Lisa makes a dread discovery. Was Jebediah in truth the ruthless pirate Hans Sprungfeld?

Notes for the Uneducated: William Dawes and Samuel Oatus, mentioned by Hurlbutt, are such minor revolutionaries that we can't find any trace of them. The Howard Hughes will and the Hitler diaries were genuine forgeries, but there's never been a retraction of the emancipation proclamation. Adlai Stevenson II (1900-1965) was a presidential candidate in the l950s. In Homer's dream of 1781, the additions to the flag wanted by George Washington are the shapes of the breakfast cereal Lucky Charms. There appear to be eighteenth-century cameos of Marge and Homer on the wall of the museum.

Song: Camptown Races sung by the skull of Jedediah Springfield ventriloquised by Chief Wiggum. The episode plays out with an ode to Jebediah.

Notes: Homer's fantasy of the fight between Sprungfeld and George Washington, replete with action movie clich�s, is fantastic. A clever, Lisa-centric episode. In fact, Bart and Maggie barely appear.
