The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Seven
Bart the Fink

What can be sadder than the funeral of a clown? Or funnier?

Episode 3F12
Story by Bob Kushell
Teleplay by John Swartzwelder
Directed by Jim Reardon
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille
Special guest voice: Bob Newhart (as himself), Phil Hartman (as Troy McClure)

Premise: Bart unwittingly lands Krusty in deep, deep trouble with the tax authorities, who rename his show Herschel Krustofsky's Clown-Related Entertainment Show. But how far will Krusty go to avoid the IRS? Auctioning his pornography? Suicide in his private plane the I'm-On-A-Rolla-Gay? Or faking his own death and starting a new life as a yachtsman?

Features: Android's Dungeon Guy, Milhouse, Jimbo, Krusty, Kent Brockman, Spotty Boy, Moleman, Patty and Selma, Jasper, Principal Skinner, Mrs Skinner, Superintendent Chalmers, Chief Wiggum, Troy McClure, Sideshow Mel, Dr Hibbert, Captain MacAllister.

Couch: A colour photocopy of the Simpsons slips on to the sofa.

Trivia:

  • All Krusty's Sideshows but Bob turn up to his funeral (including Sideshow Luke Perry).

Hi, I'm Troy McClure, you may remember me from: Such showbiz funerals as Andre the Giant, We Hardly Knew Ye and Shemp Howard, Today We Mourn a Stooge.

Notes for Brits: The sign on the side of the bus reading 'Are you missing "Mad About You" right now? NBC TV Sundays at 8' is a direct reference to the sitcom slotted opposite The Simpsons during this season.

Notes: 'What good is respect without the moolah to back it up?' Very fast and very good, with plenty of gags and effective set pieces. Bob Newhart's eulogy to Krusty is especially memorable.
