They come here, they take all the jobs...
Episode 3F20
Written by David S. Cohen
Directed by Susie Dietter
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor
Special guest voice: Joe Mantegna (as Don Tony)
Premise: 'We're Here, We're Queer, We Don't Want Any More Bears!' is the rallying cry of Homer's new anti-bear vigilante group. But when the bear is sorted out, the city needs another scapegoat. Illegal immigrants fit the bill - and their number includes Apu.
Features: Ned Flanders, Rod and Todd, Maude Flanders, Kent Brockman, Chief Wiggum, Lou and Eddie, Barney, Moe, Lenny, Mayor Quimby, Principal Skinner, Helen Lovejoy, Uter, Nelson, Groundskeeper Willie, Grampa, Apu, Professor John Frink, Kearney, Don Tony, Selma.
Cameos: Everybody's in the Vigilante Group. Also Bumblebee Man, Dr Nick Riviera, Mr Burns, Hans Moleman.
Couch: A hunter rushes in - having shot and bagged the Simpsons.
Trivia:
- Lunchlady Doris has become Postlady Doris.
- Homer's paycheck gives him $362.19 pay after deductions.
- If Grampa's memoir is to be relied on, the Simpsons emigrated to the US from Ireland when he was a child.
- According to his fake ID, Apu was born on 9 January 1962.
- Magazines at the Kwik-E-Mart include Golf Novice, Low Rider and UFO.
Notes for Brits: Proposition 24 is very similar to California's Proposition 187, which proposed the rescinding of employment rights and benefits from immigrants.
Moe's secrets: He has to sit the written citizenship test.
Notes: 'When are people going to learn - democracy doesn't work!' One of the most outspoken, and certainly angriest of episodes succeeds as a savage satire on the scapegoating of immigrants. Homer has never been so frighteningly dumb, although he does come through with a rousing liberal speech.
