The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Seven
Bart Sells His Soul

An unwise trade rocks Bart to the core of his being.

Episode 3F02
Written by Greg Daniels
Directed by Wesley Archer
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor

Premise: Bart scoffs at the very concept of soul - and sells his to Milhouse for $5. Soon he finds that automatic doors won't open to him, that the pets hiss at the sight of him, and that he doesn't find Itchy and Scratchy funny any more. Meanwhile, Moe's had a brainwave. To boost trade he's converting his tavern into 'Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag'.

Features: Rev. Lovejoy, Ralph, Milhouse, Dr Hibbert, Barney, Moe, the two barflies, Carl, Rod and Todd Flanders, Jimbo, Dolph, Kearney, Apu, Mrs van Houten, Sherri and Terri, Martin, Nelson, Ned Flanders, Maud Flanders, Chief Wiggum, Snake, Krusty, Android's Dungeon Guy.

Couch: The Simpsons rush in - in motorised clown carts.

Trivia:

  • Moe reads Your Gimmicky Restaurant by Bennigan and Fuddrucker.

Homage: In A Gadda Da Vida was a seven-minute-long prog-rock smash for lion Butterfly.

Itchy and Scratchy in: Skinless in Seattle.

Notes: Undoubtedly the most disturbing episode of the series, with Bart's nightmare of losing his soul - illustrated by a macabre playground where all the souls of his playmates are visible, and his is tagging along with Milhouse - more frightening than funny. The scene of the desperate, soulless Bart attempting to steal the soul of Ralph Wiggum is also memorable for its weirdness. An illustration of just how far the series could go by this point.
