The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Seven
Lisa the Vegetarian

It's a barbecue disaster when Lisa decides meat is murder.

Episode 3F03
Written by David S. Cohen
Directed by Mark Kirklan
Also starring: Doris Grau, Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor
Special guest voices: Phil Hartman (as Troy McClure), Linda McCartney (as herself), Paul McCartney (as himself)

Premise: Homer's planning a barbecue. Which is a big problem - because Lisa, inspired by a visit to the Storeytown Kids' Park, has decided to forsake all meat.

Features: Grampa, Ned Flanders, Miss Hoover, Ralph, Lunchlady Doris, Principal Skinner, Groundskeeper Willie, Janey, Barney, Dr Hibbert, Chief Wiggum, Mr Burns, Smithers, Sherri and Terri, Kent Brockman, Apu.

Couch:The Simpsons rush in as outlines - and get filled in by robotic paint guns.

Homage: Linda McCartney quotes, appropriately, a line from the Beatles' song Octopus's Garden. The reference to hidden messages in reversed Beatles songs refers to the (mistaken) belief that 'Paul Is Dead' was spoken backwards on the Sergeant Pepper album. The end credits play out with McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed, with a recipe for lentil soup read by Paul played backwards over it.

Hi, I'm Troy McClure, you may remember me from: Meat and You: Partners in Freedom (Number 3F03 in the Resistance is Useless series of educational films). And other educational films such as 2-3 = Negative Fun, and Firecrackers: The Silent Killers.

Itchy and Scratchy in: Esophagus Now. An especially disgusting entry to the canon.

Notes: 'You don't win friends with salad!' Lisa's finest hour - you'll cheer as she saves the life of an earthworm, triggers the school's Independent Thought alarm system and makes a pig fly. A very simple, very memorable episode with superb guest cameos from the McCartneys.
