Outside ads, sinister Scotsmen and the third dimension.
Episode 3F04
Written by John Swartzwelder, Steve Tombkins, David S. Cohen
Directed by Bob Anderson
Also starring: Russi Taylor
Special guest voices: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel), Paul Anka (as himself)
Premise: Attack of the 50 Ft Eyesores: in which Springfield is menaced by advertising hoardings brought to life by celestial energy. Nightmare On Evergreen Terrace; in which Groundskeeper Willie haunts the dreams of the kids of Springfield Elementary. And Homer A3: in which Homer becomes lost in the mysterious third dimension.
Couch: The hanged Simpsons dangle down over the sofa.
Homage: The three segments are direct pastiches of Attack of the 50 Ft Woman (Nathan Hertz, 1958), the Nightmare On Elm Street movies, and the Twilight Zone episode Little Girl Lost respectively. There are also references to Mork and Mindy, Terminator 2, The Pagemaster (Martin Prince's dream), Tron, and The Black Hole (the appearance of the third dimension). When Homer emerges into our world at the episode's climax, the library from the computer game Myst can be seen matted on to the horizon.
Mmmmm: ...sprinkles...erotic cakes.
Song: Just Don't Look sung by Paul Anka and Lisa.
Notes: Complex, very assured and very clever, this feels like The Simpsons moving into a whole new era. The computer graphics are outstanding, and the final scene - as Homer enters our dimension - is one of the highlights of the entire series.
