The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Eight
Bart After Dark

Bawdy house blues for Bart.

Episode 4F06
Written by Richard Appel
Directed by Dominic Polcino
Also starring: Tress MacNeille, Pamela Hayden, Maggie Roswell
Special guest voice: Phil Hartman (as Lionel Hutz)

Premise: While Lisa and Marge join a host of celebrities to clean up animals caught in an oil slick, Homer sends Bart to work in a burlesque house, Maison Derriere, run by the seductive Belle. Marge returns - and vows to have the joint closed down.

Features: Kent Brockman, Captain McCallister, Rainier Wolfcastle, Milhouse, Nelson, Martin Prince, Ralph, Mr Burns, Smithers, Lionel Hutz, Grampa, Herman, Dr Nick Riviera, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, Maude Flanders, Helen Lovejoy, Rev. Lovejoy, Mayor Quimby, Lenny, Carl, Ruth Powers, Kirk van Houten, Luanne van Houten, Moe, Groundskeeper Willie, Miss Hoover, Hans Moleman, Sideshow Mel, Ms Krabappel, Sanjay, Apu, Chief Wiggum, Otto, Dr Hibbert, Mrs Wiggum, Mrs Skinner, Chalmers, Patty, Selma, Cletus, Barney, Jasper, Lou and Eddie, Mr Largo, Mr Lovejoy, Bumblebee Man, Krusty, Jimbo Jones, Kearney, Dolph, Android's Dungeon Guy.

Couch: The sofa is replaced by a pastiche of the cover collage from The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It features: Hans Moleman, Patty, Selma, Apu, Barney, Radioactive Man, Rev. Lovejoy, Skinner, Sideshow Bob, Otto, Smithers, Mr Burns, Marvin Munroe, Herb Powell, Ned, Jimbo, Kearney, Dolph, Eddie, Lou, Nelson (holding a Krusty doll), Bleedin' Gums Murphy, Chief Wiggum, Sherri and Terri, Kent Brockman, Ms Krabappel, Grampa, Miss Hoover, Dr Hibbert, Quimby, Cletus, his wife Brandine, Android's Dungeon Guy, Moe, Troy McClure, Lionel Hutz, Krusty, Princess Kashmir, Martin, Milhouse, and Itchy and Scratchy.

The Simpsons occupy the place of the Sergeant Pepper era Beatles, while the sixties Beatles are represented by the Simpsons as they appeared in the Tracey Ullman shorts. At the front, The Simpsons is spelled out in pink sugar-coated doughnuts, with Santa's Little Helper and Snowball II, Blinky the fish in a bowl, a baby Homer and Jebediah Springfield's head amongst the memorabilia.

Trivia:

  • Marge is 37 and is a third-generation Springfield resident.
  • Former US president Eisenhower has been a punter at Belle's Maison Derriere.

Homage: The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Cohn Higgins, 1982) provides the character of Belle, much of Maison Derriere's design, and Marge's campaign to clean up Springfield. The 0-pe-Ra show going out of control incident recalls the 1995 edition of The Jenny Jones Show after which one of the guests shot another dead.

Itchy and Scratchy in: Good Cats, Bad Choices.

Look out for: Lisa and her peach tree. Bart's exploration of Maison Derriere: 'I have been grossly misinformed about witches.'

Song: The Spring in Springfield sung by Belle.

Notes: The cynical attack on celebrities jumping on the bandwagon to save cute, fluffy seals caught in oil slicks is spot on and Tress MacNeille's Belle is a wonderful character.
