The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Eight
Lisa's Date With Density

Lisa tries to find Nelson's sensitive side.

Episode 4F01
Written by Mike Scully
Directed by Susie Dietter
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor

Premise: To her own horror, Lisa develops a crush on Nelson Muntz. She sets out to uncover the charming, sophisticated, good-natured young man she believes exists beneath the veneer of sadistic bully and general bad-doer. Back home, Homer's causing problems with his new automatic telephone-dialling system.

Features: Principal Skinner, Chalmers, Kearney, Apu, Ned Flanders, Chief Wiggum, Eddie, Lou, Janey, Wendell, Sherri and Terri, Richard, Jimbo Jones, Kearney, Dolph, Nelson, Groundskeeper Willie, Milhouse, Ralph Wiggum, Ms Krabappel, Captain McCalhister, Miss Hoover, Lewis, Mr Burns, Mr Largo, Todd Flanders, Uter, Martin Prince, Grampa, Jasper, Dr Fnink, Mrs Skinner.

Couch: The sofa and the family are suspended upside down.

Trivia:

  • Chalmers owns a 1979 Honda Accord while Kearney has a Hyundai.
  • Homer tries to add things to his doughnut that are not sprinkles - including a Mans Bar, a Twizzler and a Jolly Rancher.

Homage: Lisa's doomed romance with 'just misunderstood' Nelson, and his flight from the cops, pay homage to Rebel Without a Cause (Nicholas Ray, 1955) - even parts of Lisa's costume are similar to Natalie Wood's from the movie.

Notes for the Uneducated: Lisa's description of Nelson -'a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma' - was Winston Churchill's opinion of Russia at the outbreak of World War II.

Notes: Nelson takes centre stage for the first time. Also impressive for the desperate stunts of the lovesick Milhouse, who, even after Nelson has beaten him up for apparently making a pass, will still do anything for uncaring Lisa.
