The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Nine
Bart Star

Football's coming home for Homer and Bart.

Episode 5F03
Written by Donick Carey
Directed by Dominic Polcino
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor
Special guest voices: Roy Firestone (as himself), Joe Namath (as himself), Mike Judge (as Hank Hill)

Premise: After Ned Flanders coaches the local kids' football team to victory after victory, a jealous Homer takes over, putting Bart as the star player. Not only is this something Bart doesn't want, but also, by replacing Nelson Muntz with Bart, the team hasn't a hope.

Features: Mr Burns, Smithers, Carl, Lenny, Patty, Selma, Grampa, Jasper, Kent Brockman, Chief Wiggum, Mrs Wiggum, Miss Hoover, Groundskeeper Willie, Otto, Milhouse, Martin, Nelson, Sherri and Terri, Lewis, Richard, Wendell, Uter, Janey, Allison, Helen Lovejoy, the Flanderses, Mr van Houten, Mrs van Houten, Ruth Powers, Dr Hibbert, Quimby, Bumblebee Man, Troy McClure, Rainier Wolfcastle, Krusty, Sideshow Mel, Apu, Sanjay, Dr Nick Riviera.

Couch: The Simpsons are caught in a car-crusher.

Trivia:

  • The Free Health Fair welcomes cheapskates and Dr Nick has a booth helping you identify what sex you are.
  • Homer meanwhile has made up Skittle-Brau, a lager with candy in it.

Notes for Brits: This one is about American Football. Apparently it has some rules, but what exactly they are is anyone's guess.

Look out for: Bart quoting The Thing from the Marvel Comics series, The Fantastic Four: 'It's clobberin' time', while Lisa has a sudden loss of interest in joining the team when they welcome her rather than stop her - a great twist. There's a nice cameo from the King of the Hill cartoon series cast, and we particularly like the idea that Homer was once a classy gymnast until Grampa ruined his confidence. Homer, during the credits, kicking everyone off the team, including the Gracie Film's 'Shush' lady.

Notes: A fun episode, where you root for Bart and, unusually, Nelson - all the way through. Homer is just too stupid for words, but that's excusable because we finally see Ned Flanders lose it, big time!
