RealMedia: The end of the Royal Yacht

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

What's the point in having your own country if you can't get around it?

Since a prince can't catch a No.42 bus (though there is rumoured to be a Tube stop to Harrods, hidden beneath Buckingham Palace) the monarchy have invested in a fleet of Royal ships, trains, jets, cars and horse-drawn carriages (there are over 100) to get about.

Royal cars are divided into those for private use, such as Prince Philip's Range Rover, and those for official events. There are nine limousines in the Royal Fleet, five Rolls-Royces and three Daimlers, as well as a number of 'people carriers' - all painted 'Royal Maroon'. As part of her Jubilee celebrations she has been presented with a spanking new custom built Bentley.

Thanks to a stroke of royal branding genius, you can always tell if something is for HRH's use only by the cunning addition of the word Royal in front of it - hence 'Royal Yacht', 'Royal Train', and 'Royal Plane'.
