Queen Mother and Prince Charles meet the crowds

The Queen Mother's 100th Birthday

Every Brit looks forwards to a telegram from the Queen on their 100th birthday, but it was an extra special occasion when the postman delivered the Queen Mother's congratulatory telegram from her daughter, signed simply 'Lilibet'.

The Queen Mother, born Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, on 4 August 1900, had seen her birthdays become something of a national ritual during the late 20th Century. Hundreds would stand outside her house and shout either the traditional 'Happy Birthday Your Madge' or the classic 'Gawd bless you ma'am'.

The public made sure the 100th birthday of their 'favourite royal' was celebrated in style with over 40,000 well wishers lining the streets to watch the procession.
