The Airport

La Jetée

This experimental 29 minute sci-fi movie summed up the mood of adventure in Sixties film making. Though briefly a cult hit, it was largely ignored by the public. Ironically it later became the inspiration for 1995 Hollywood blockbuster Twelve Monkeys, starring Brad Pitt.

Comprised entirely of stills, except for one barely noticable scene where a character blinks, La Jetée is the tale of a man haunted by a childhood memory of someone being shot to death at an airport in Paris.

Following the destruction of the city he takes part in a time travel experiment to see if he can retrieve supplies and find an explanation for the catastrophe. In the past, he falls in love with a woman he meets and finds his fate is inextricably tied up with his memories.
