Package holidays became affordable for the ordinary family in 1974. Trips to Spain were the most fashionable and holiday makers needed new gear for the hot weather. Flights were cheaper than ever and for the in-flight meal you would have been lucky to get a custard cream.
Bikinis, sun glasses, hats and shorts all made their way back to England along with painful sunburn and the obligatory papier-mache donkey.
