The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Five
Bart's Inner Child

The Simpsons decide to help themselves.

Episode 1F05
Written by George Meyer
Directed by Bob Anderson
Also starring: Russi Taylor, Albert Brooks (as Brad Goodman), Pamela Hayden
Special guest voices: Phil Hartman (as Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz), Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel), James Brown (as himself)

Premise: Homer decides to invest in a trampoline, while Marge is busy discovering the message of Brad Goodman and his self-awareness seminars.

Features: Krusty, Otto, Milhouse, Martin Prince, Sherri and Terri, Lewis, Richard, Nelson, Janey, Dolph, Kearney, Todd Flanders, Rod Flanders, Ralph Wiggum, Snake, Jimbo Jones, Ned Flanders, Patty, Selma, Troy McClure, Dr Hibbert, Hans Moleman, Sideshow Mel, Ms Krabappel, Miss Hoover, Mayor Quimby, Mr Burns, Smithers, Apu, Lenny, Moe, Maude Flanders, Principal Skinner, Mrs Skinner, Barney, Jasper, Grampa, Kent Brockman, Rev. Lovejoy, Groundskeeper Willie, Dr Marvin Monroe, Carl, Chief Wiggum, Captain McCallister, Sanjay, Helen Lovejoy, Snake, Lionel Hutz.

Couch: The family rush in - to find the sofa occupied by a very fat man.

Homage: James Brown sings I Got You, his 1966 hit. Rev. Lovejoy plays Scott Joplin's The Entertainer on the church organ.

Hi, I'm Troy McClure, you may remember me from: such self-help videos as Smoke Yourself Thin and Get Confident, Stupid!

Notes for Brits: Brad Goodman is a parody of American self-help guru John Bradshaw. Many of their methods are similar - Bradshaw uses diagrams on a blackboard to explain simplistic points.

Look out for: Homer trying to get rid of the trampoline off a cliff and the subsequent Looney Toons-style sight gags.

Notes: A very bizarre episode in which everyone just has a good time. Bart might think Brad Goodman is a bit of a fraud, but nevertheless, he doesn't do any real harm.
