Art-house cinema comes to Springfield. Briefly.
Episode 2F31
Written by Ken Keeler
Directed by Susie Dietter
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Doris Grau
Special guest voices: Maurice la Marche (as George C. Scott), Jon Lovitz (as Jay Sherman), Phil Hartman (as Chariton Heston)
Premise: Springfield decides to have a film festival and Marge invites Jay Sherman to help judge it. Mr Burns decides to make a movie, and ensure it will win by bribing everyone involved.
Features: Kent Brockman, Barney, Principal Skinner, Grampa, Lenny, Carl, Apu, Otto, Mr Largo, Moe, Ms Krabappel, Krusty, Mayor Quimby, Patty, Selma, Milhouse, Miss Hoover, Chief Wiggum, Eddie, Lou, Herman, the Flanderses, Rainier Wolfcastle, Mr Burns, Smithers, Bumblebee Man, Dr Hibbert, Snake, Hans Moleman, Rev. Lovejoy, Nelson.
Couch: The relative size of the family is reversed, so that Homer is a tiny child and Maggie a giant.
Trivia:
- The new McBain film is called Let's Get Silly.
- Among the films are A Burns For All Seasons (made by Monty Burns), Pukeahontas (Barney Gumble), Bright Lights, Beef Jerky (Apu), Moe Better Blues (Moe Szyslak) and Man Getting Hit by Football (Hans Moleman).
Homage: Jay Sherman is the central character of the animated series The Critic, which shares many production personnel with The Simpsons.
Itchy and Scratchy in: Four Funerals and a Wedding.
Mmmmm: ...beer nuts.
Song: The Rapping Rabbis cover MC Hammer's 1990 hit U Can't Touch This.
Notes: Barney's film is magnificent, but it's easy to see why Homer wants Hans Moleman to be the winner. Jay Sherman perhaps proves here, even more so than in The Critic, just why that show failed. He's too flawed to be likeable.
